KONY 2012

Invisible children is a non-profit organization that aims to bring awareness to the activities of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Central Africa. It was founded in 2004 and up until recently, their campaign for KONY 2012 went viral. KONY 2012 was created to promote the movement to

The film's purpose is to promote the charity's "Stop Kony" movement to make indicted Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony globally known in order to have him arrested by December 2012, the time when the campaign expires. KONY 2012 was released on the 5th of March 2012 and has reached 89 million views in a little over 2 months. If that’s not awesome I don’t know what is.

After the sudden fame, the corporation then created the event ‘Cover the Night’. This was made to further expose Joseph Kony to the world. ‘Cover the Night’ involved people going around the city at night putting posters of KONY 2012 all over the city so that in the morning when people wake up, they will see the posters everywhere.

Before the actual event however, stress struck the co-founder of invisible children Jason Russell which was the main character in the KONY 2012 video. He was recorded by TMZ, having a very public meltdown on the streets of San Diego. (Warning: This video is explicit, Parental Discretion Is Advised)

This severely damaged the reputation of ‘Invisible Children’. According to Jason’s wife, he was not under the influence of any drug, but was having a breakdown due to the negative attention and personal criticism KONY2012 film has generated. Due to that break down, the KONY2012 campaign have slowly diminished out of societies sight.

Star Wars Kid

Who knows what this Canadian kid was thinking when he decided to make this video but it certainly has caused controversy.

In November 2002 Ghyslain Raza made this video of himself swinging a golf ball retriever around imitating a Star Wars- like battle pretending to be Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode 1.

The video was found by four of Ghyslain's classmates, they started to leak the video, it went viral and he was ridiculed and harassed for it. This video has become one of the most popular viral videos of all times as it is one of the first cautionary tales in the debate about privacy on the internet.

Ghyslain was so ridiculed for his activities in the video that he slipped into depression and had to take time off from school to seek psychiatric care. His family sued the families of the classmates who leaked the video for $250,000, then settled out of court.
The video still remains popular today with still large numbers of viewers, over 25 million to date, and numerous parodies have been created.

Walk of the Earth - Somebody That I Used to Know

‘Walk of the Earth’ are a Canadian band that has achieved mild success on Youtube posting covers versions of songs. This mild success turned to a viral hit when they recorded their cover of Australian singer Gotye’s song ‘Somebody that I used to know’.

This video had appeal for a number of reasons. Firstly, the performance required a lot of skill. Using the one guitar, I can’t imagine how many takes that would have had to do without anyone making an error. Secondly, there is a subtle humour in the video, mostly thanks to ‘beard guy’ (a name dubbed by the internet community), who spends most of the video staring intently off into the distance.

Strangely, this video has benefited not only the cover band, but the artist himself. It has always been a struggle for Australian musicians to make it on the U.S. charts. Since this video has gone viral, Gotye’s song has reached number one on the U.S. charts, an achievement that hasn’t been made in 12 years, when Savage Garden’s ‘I Knew I Loved You’ hit number 1 in 2000.

Nyan Cat

This video is simple and has an uncomplicated backstory: take an animated cartoon cat give it a pop tart body and send it flying through space leaving behind a rainbow trail with an accompanying Japanese pop song set it to loop and collect views.

If the original running time of 3:37 isn’t long enough for you there are 10 and even 100 hour videos with
13 and 7 million views respectively.

The simplicity of the video helped spawn countless remixes parodies and covers.
Roughly 100,000 videos have been posted with “nyan” in the title in just over a year. These videos combined have over 400 million views.

Some notable examples include:

The real meaning of MPH

Question-

If you travelling 80 miles per hour, how long does it take you to go 80 miles?

To most this is a self explanatory question with the answer being simply 1 hour,  but this question was not so simple for Chelsea Chambers.
When Chelsea and her husband Travis were on a road trip, Travis asked his wife the same simple math question which she struggled to answer for a good 4 minutes.

This video shows the thinking styles that many young people have adopted in today's popular culture and is satisfying to watch for most viewers as they derive a sense of pleasure in feeling superior to another person for knowing the answer.

The video went viral with over 6 million views and the couple appeared on ABC news in the US.

A Dramatic Surprise

TNT’s absurd ad that focuses on observer reactions of unfolding ‘drama’ has exploded (dramatically) onto the web peaking at 6.6 million daily views on just the second day since posted.

The promotion uses simple text to set the scene as a quiet square in a quiet town with a big red button atop a podium placed next to a large arrow labeled “Push to add drama”. A dramatic music score is used throughout the 1:46 minute video to build tension and set the pace. The camera follows the tentative participant as they press the button, immediately a siren is played and a series of increasingly ridiculous events play out with the camera switching to the bewildered onlookers every few seconds.

This video is a strong example of a successful viral video campaign.

Susan Boyle - "I Dreamed a Dream"

Roughly about three years ago, the now famous Susan Boyle auditioned for 'Britain's Got Talent' and blew the world away.

The video has a 'diamond in the rough' theme, and is a triumph in a music industry that has become very superficial in recent decades.

Simon Cowell, the judge that everyone loves to hate, gives his usual harsh judgment when Susan walks on stage. We even see a girl in the audience at 0:45 roll her eyes at the sight of her..

When she belted out the firsts lines to Les Miserables' 'I Dreamed a Dream' it brought tears to our eyes seeing everyone's jaws drop; especially the usually cynical Simon Cowell.

Singing one of the most emotional songs in musical theatre, the dramatic turn of events feels like something out of a Hollywood film.

Although this aired on British television, without the help of Youtube and the internet, Susan's fame probably would have died off after a week. She now has record deals and has released three studio albums.

The video has collectively gained about 140 million views worldwide.

"Friday"

Rebecca Black, a young American recording artist released this song "Friday" on March 14 2011, and it became an overnight sensation after Michael J Nelson, (a comedian) on twitter called it "the worst video ever made". The video amassed with more than 167 million views and over 3.1 million dislikes. On June 16th the video was removed from YouTube but uploaded again due to overwhelming demand and popularity.

Yahoo music called it "the worst song ever".
Time ranked it number 2 on a list of top 10 songs with silly lyrics.

Even with all the negative reviews it can't be denied that there is just something catchy about this song. It's bizarre lyrics and out of tune singing is just hilariously dreadful.

Numerous parodies of "Friday" have been uploaded to YouTube and have become viral in their own right. Conan O'Brien has released a parody called "Thursday" on the Conan show.

Worst song of all time but has become a Youtube sensation!!
