Charlie bit my finger!

Ouch Charlie!...The Charlie bit my finger video. The video that defines viral hits in the 'cuteness' category of Youtube videos (and yes, that excludes cat videos).

'Charlie bit my finger' is the perfect example of accidental success. The video was posted by the boys' father, so he could show the boys' godfather, who lived in the United States at the time. Not only did the godfather see the video, 448,712,513 (8:57am 26/04/2012) others did too.

This video holds the record for the most revenue earned by a non-professional video on Youtube. The video has earned over US$500,000^ since its upload on 22nd May 2007.

Revenue isn't the only thing this video has spawned; it has also lead to a series of parodies. The following is one of hundreds (if not, thousands) of parodies available on Youtube:

Sitting on the Toilet

Now.. from the title, I’m sure your confused. This is a unique video that 60 million viewers found hilarious. A funny prank turned into a youtube sensation when a sister posted a video of another sister (Nonnie) on the toilet. This was a prank based on revenge after Nonnie posted an embarrassing photo of her sister on Myspace. Although it was a small prank, millions find it hilarious, yet disturbing.

This was the start to a number of parodies. Including different versions:

As well as an auto- tuned mix:

The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

The Old Spice video campaign was launched on www.youtube.com February 4th 2010 the day after the super bowl capitalising on the post super bowl ad review tv spots. The first TV spot was not until February 8th.

Isaiah Mustafa plays the man your man could smell like gracefully leaping from one romantic scene to another without breaking eye-contact while asking rhetorical questions. Though the Old Spice body wash is for men the campaign targets the female audience, as the company found women more likely to make purchasing decisions.

The Man Your Man Could Smell Like has even been parodied on Sesame Street.

The ad was given positive review by New York Daily News, People Magazine, was recognised by the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival and even won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding commercial.

Old Spice launched a follow up series where they used Twitter to ask followers to submit questions for the Old Spice Man Isaiah Mustafa to answer.

On Twitter, @JustineBateman wrote "Can the Old Spice guy do ads for ALL the world's products?!

Old Spice has reported increased sales by 107% a year after the campaign. I'm on a horse.

Advancement of Technology

The advancement of technology is clearly evident in this video which was taken at a music festival in California. Holograms were used to depict a late rapper named Tupac performing next to Snoop Dog, another famous rapper. This video went viral straight after the festival ended. The video reached one million viewers in no less than a day.

Hot Problems

Web 2.0 has given the everyday person the gift of a voice. An outlet to share a point of view with the rest of the world. The phenomenon of the internet has also removed the barrier of direct confrontation; allowing people to communicate with the world more confidently.

This, however, has also had a negative impact. The social networking epidemic has also given us the ability to make a complete fool of ourselves on an incredibly larger scale than previously.

Us internet viewers also have a taste in viewing these public humiliations, and promptly sharing amongst our friends. Early 2011 brought us the horrid 'Friday' by Rebecca Black, and the poorness in songwriting doesn't stop there.

Double Take, a teenage girl duo, have brought us a song about the pains of being more attractive than everyone else.

"Hot Girls. We have problems too. We're just like you, except we're hot."

A part of me feels sorry for the girls foolishness in posting this online, but at the same time, I cannot stop laughing at how terrible every aspect of this video. From the irony in the lyrics, to the awkward on-screen performance, everything about this music video is the worst of the worst, and this is why we love to hate it.

This may be the worst music video I have seen to date, but following Youtube's consistent record, we will probably be graced with something worse in the future.
